Very few people ever get the opportunity to have a best friend in the traditional sense of the term these days. Being a best friend means standing by someone regardless of their circumstances. It also means being committed to that individual for the long haul no matter what challenges may be presented in that relationship. Generally speaking, giving yourself the opportunity to have a best friend is often one of the greatest things you can do in your life, because with a best friend you will never feel alone.

Your best friend will never speak badly of you even when you make a mistake. They will not allow others speak badly of you either without attempting to stand up for you and defend your honor. Your best friend will know all of your other weaknesses, but never will exploit them. They will only speak of your positive qualities and try to make you look like the incredible person they know that you are. It will be painful anytime someone speaks badly of you because they think of you as almost family.

The best friend will put their reputation on the line for you when people are questioning your credibility. They have no problem in standing up for you because they know you would do the same thing for them without being asked. An acquaintance might offer words of encouragement during a difficult time, your best friend will be physically present with you during the hardest times in your life and not leave until they are secure in the knowledge that you are physically and emotionally okay. Even when it has been established that you are okay, they will call the next day just to verify nothing has changed.

Acquaintances might make pleasant small talk about how your family is doing. A true friend tries to be involved not only in your life, but in the life of your family and the people that are important to you. The extension of your friendship goes beyond the two of you and extends into family relationships as well as each other’s children. Protection of your family interest is one way that you can tell someone is your best friend.

When you are in trouble your best friend is the first person that you will call even if it's 3 a.m. in the morning! They will have the ability to calm down any fears that you might have, and any problems that need solving, they will be available to figure out the best strategy to get your life back on track. Your best friend will know all of your secrets and never share them with anyone.

Your best friend can find the good points in your weaknesses and trust you with the most important things in their life. They will help you change your life if you want you, but never expect you to change, unless the changes are something you believe in doing. They are filled with encouragement when you make good decisions and support when you make mistakes. Honesty and integrity are part of the relationship, and there is no fear of rejection, because you worry not about being judged.
